Summer in Lenawee County is a time of joy and relaxation, especially around our beautiful lakes. The serene waters invite residents and visitors alike to engage in swimming, boating, and fishing. The Lenawee County Health Department is committed to ensuring that everyone can enjoy these activities safely and responsibly. As we dive into July, let’s explore essential safety tips that align with our public health goals to keep you and your loved ones safe on and around our lakes.
Swimming Safety
- Swim in Designated Areas: Always swim in areas designated for swimming. These areas are monitored for safety and water quality, reducing the risk of accidents and exposure to harmful bacteria.
- Supervise Children: Never leave children unattended near the water. Drowning can happen quickly and silently. Designate a responsible adult to watch over young swimmers.
- Use Life Jackets: For those who are not strong swimmers or for young children, life jackets are a must. They provide buoyancy and can be lifesaving in an emergency.
- Follow Posted Rules: Heed all posted signs and warnings. These are in place to protect you from hazards like strong currents, sudden drop-offs, or underwater obstructions.
- Stay Hydrated and Sun-Protected: Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to dehydration and sunburn. Drink plenty of water and use sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin.
Boating Safety
- Wear Life Jackets: Ensure that everyone on board wears a life jacket, regardless of their swimming abilities. Life jackets should be U.S. Coast Guard-approved and fit properly.
- Avoid Alcohol: Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol is not only illegal but extremely dangerous. Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction times, increasing the risk of accidents.
- Check Weather Conditions: Always check the weather forecast before heading out. Sudden storms can make boating hazardous. If you notice dark clouds, strong winds, or lightning, return to shore immediately.
- Follow Navigation Rules: Just like on the road, there are rules on the water. Know and follow the boating “rules of the road” to prevent collisions.
- Equip Your Boat Properly: Ensure your boat has the necessary safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, flares, a first aid kit, and a working radio.
Fishing Safety
- Use Appropriate Gear: Use fishing gear that is suitable for the type of fishing you are doing. Ensure hooks, lines, and rods are in good condition to prevent injuries.
- Be Mindful of Weather and Water Conditions: Similar to boating, always check the weather before going fishing. Fast-changing conditions can pose risks, especially if you are far from shore.
- Handle Fish with Care: Use gloves when handling fish to avoid cuts from sharp fins and teeth. Be aware of local advisories about fish consumption, especially regarding mercury and other contaminants.
- Properly Dispose of Hooks and Lines: Dispose of fishing lines and hooks properly. Left in the environment, they can harm wildlife and create hazards for other people.
- Stay Within Posted Limits: Adhere to fishing limits and regulations to protect our fish populations and ecosystems. Overfishing can deplete fish stocks and disrupt the natural balance.
Protecting Our Lakes
Keeping our lakes clean and healthy is a shared responsibility. Here are a few tips to help protect our precious waterways:
- Avoid Littering: Dispose of trash in designated bins. Littering pollutes the water and harms wildlife.
- Use Environmentally Friendly Products: Choose biodegradable and non-toxic products for cleaning boats and gear.
- Respect Wildlife: Observe wildlife from a distance and do not feed animals. Human food can harm them and alter their natural behaviors.
Lenawee County’s lakes are a treasure for all to enjoy. By following these safety tips, we can ensure that swimming, boating, and fishing remain safe and enjoyable activities for everyone. The Lenawee County Health Department wishes you a fun and safe July on our beautiful lakes. Let’s make this summer memorable for all the right reasons!
