As summer reaches its peak, many of us are spending more time outdoors, enjoying the warm weather and sunshine. However, it’s important to remember that while the sun provides many benefits, it can also pose a risk to our vision if proper precautions are not taken. At the Lenawee County Health Department, we are dedicated to promoting eye health and protecting those peepers, especially during the sunny summer months.
Sun Safety for Your Eyes
The sun emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause significant damage to your eyes over time. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can lead to a variety of eye issues, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and even skin cancer around the eyelids. Here are some tips to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays:
- Wear Sunglasses: Invest in a good pair of sunglasses that block out 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation. Look for sunglasses labeled “UV 400” for maximum protection.
- Use a Wide-Brimmed Hat: A hat with a wide brim can provide additional protection by shading your eyes and face from direct sunlight.
- Seek Shade: When the sun is at its strongest, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., try to stay in the shade as much as possible.
- Avoid Tanning Beds: Tanning beds also emit UV radiation that can be harmful to your eyes. If you use tanning beds, make sure to wear protective eyewear.
July is Healthy Vision Month
July is recognized as Healthy Vision Month, a perfect time to prioritize your eye health and ensure that your vision is the best it can be. Regular eye exams are crucial for detecting vision problems early and maintaining overall eye health. During an eye exam, an eye care professional can identify issues such as refractive errors, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and other conditions that can affect your vision and eye health.
Free Vision Screenings for Children
At the Lenawee County Health Department, we understand the importance of early detection and intervention for vision problems in children. To support the eye health of our community’s youngest members, we provide free vision screenings for preschool and school-age children. These screenings are essential in identifying vision issues that can impact a child’s learning and development. Early detection can lead to timely treatment, helping to ensure that children have the best possible start in life.
