A small claims case is a monetary lawsuit for amounts up to $7,000, offering a simplified legal process for resolving disputes. By filing a small claims case, you waive your right to an attorney and a jury trial. To proceed, you must provide a valid address for the defendant and ensure jurisdiction by confirming that the defendant resides in Lenawee County or that the transaction in question occurred there. The original affidavit must be notarized unless filed in person with valid identification. Service of the claim can be completed via certified mail or by a court officer. Please note that our court’s standard scheduling timeframe for small claims cases is at least five weeks.
