Heat Risk
The National Weather Service (NWS) HeatRisk Tool indicates Orange - Moderate level heat risk for most of the state starting Wednesday July 23 and escalating to Red – Major for most of the Lower Peninsula on Thursday July 24. Going forward there will continue to be Orange - Moderate level heat risk into the following week across the state and especially in the Lower Peninsula. Weather forecasts currently show temperatures into the upper 90’s with heat index values at or above 100 on Wednesday July 23 and Thursday July 24. Adittionally, low temperatures will remain in the mid- to upper 70's which means those without access to air conditioning will not get much relief at night thereby increasing risk for heat related illness. An update will be provided if conditions are forecasted to worsen or extend.

Health Risks of Hot Weather
When it is very hot, there is an increased risk of heat-related illness. The body’s temperature rises and cannot be cooled by sweating or the other ways the body cools itself. The most severe heat-related illnesses are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If not treated, heat exhaustion can worsen and cause heat stroke or death.
