Lenawee County has experienced severe weather this week, leaving standing water and the potential for additional rain in the forecast this weekend. As we enter the peak of severe weather season, the Lenawee County Health Department urges residents to take precautions to stay safe and protect their homes and families.
Flood and Standing Water Safety
- Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters – Just six inches of moving water can knock over an adult, and a foot of water can carry away a vehicle.
- Protect yourself from contaminants – Standing water may contain bacteria, chemicals, and other hazards. If you come in contact with floodwater, wash with soap and clean water as soon as possible.
- Prevent mold growth – If your home has been affected by water intrusion, dry and disinfect wet areas within 24-48 hours to prevent mold.
- Check your private well – If your well has been submerged or affected by flooding, it may be contaminated. Do not drink or use the water until it has been tested and deemed safe.
Severe Weather Preparedness
- Have an emergency kit ready – Include bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, medications, and important documents.
- Stay informed – Sign up for alerts at lenaweealerts.com
- Plan for power outages – Charge your devices, stock up on flashlights and batteries, and have a backup power source if needed.
Mosquito and Health Concerns
- Eliminate standing water – Empty containers, birdbaths, clogged gutters, and other areas where mosquitoes can breed.
- Use insect repellent – Protect yourself from mosquito-borne illnesses by applying EPA-approved repellents when outdoors.
