Love Your Lungs

As the leaves change colors and the air turns crisp, October brings a reminder to prioritize one of the most vital organs in our body—our lungs! This month is designated as Healthy Lung Month, and it’s the perfect time to focus on breathing easier and protecting your respiratory health.

Seasonal Respiratory Immunization Clinics

With fall upon us, it's also the start of respiratory illness season. The Lenawee County Health Department is offering Seasonal Respiratory Immunization Clinics on Mondays and Fridays throughout October. We’re here to help you stay protected with vaccinations for the flu, COVID-19, RSV, and pneumonia. These immunizations are essential, especially for older adults, individuals with chronic health conditions, and those with weakened immune systems.

You can schedule your appointment for the immunization clinic by calling the Health Department at 517-264-5226, option 2. Staying up to date on your vaccinations is a simple yet effective way to prevent respiratory infections and protect your lungs.

Quit Smoking: A Key Step for Lung Health

If you smoke, Healthy Lung Month is an ideal time to take the first step toward quitting. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable lung disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Quitting smoking, at any age, significantly improves your lung function and overall health.

We understand quitting is not easy, but you don’t have to do it alone. The Lenawee County Health Department offers resources and support to help you quit smoking for good. You can also visit smokefree.gov or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free tools, guidance, and personalized support.

Love Your Lungs Year-Round

Your lungs work tirelessly every day, so taking care of them is essential for long-term health. Aside from vaccination and quitting smoking, here are other simple ways to keep your lungs healthy:

  • Stay Active: Regular exercise strengthens your lungs and improves lung capacity.
  • Avoid Pollutants: Limit exposure to secondhand smoke, chemicals, and outdoor air pollution.
  • Practice Good Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of respiratory infections.
  • See Your Doctor Regularly: Early detection of lung disease can save lives.

This October, commit to showing your lungs some love. Whether it’s getting vaccinated, quitting smoking, or simply breathing in the fresh fall air, every step you take can lead to healthier lungs and a healthier you.
